Understanding of geopolitical cycles is as critical as economic

A geopolitical recession begins as U.S. dominance gives way to a new world order.

Business leaders are accustomed to dealing with economic recessions and the risks they entail. They have had to cope with these cycles roughly every six or seven years since World War II, Ian Bremmer told the general membership meeting of the Investment Company Institute on May 5.

Businesses need to be equally aware of geopolitical cycles, which are likely to become increasingly volatile, said the political risk expert who is president of the political risk-focused consulting firm Eurasia Group.

New York-based Eurasia, in its annual Top Risks report in January, called 2017 the start of “a period of geopolitical recession.”
